If you have car insurance from a U.S. company, it is very important to understand its territoriality because some of the insurance companies do not cover vehicle damages or theft beyond some miles inside the Mexico border. We are not aware of any Canadian company that extends coverage to Mexico.
On the other hand, although your U.S. or Canadian insurance company may extend coverage to Mexico, the Mexican government requires that Liability insurance must be provided by a Mexican insurance company.
In the Mexican legal system, it is assumed that any person who drives a vehicle is able to pay for the damages they cause in an accident. However if the person cannot pay for the damages, by law their vehicle could be impounded and the driver could go to jail.
Considering the consequences, don’t take risks! Buy you policy online, have a safe trip, and enjoy your travels in Mexico.
Traffic and safety regulations, as well as highways and bridges in Mexico are very different from the United States and Canada. While driving in Mexico, we recommend you drive very carefully. You have to be in “expecting the unexpected” mode, even more when driving on a interstate road. Most accidents involving tourists happened because they didn’t expect a sudden change in traffic or road conditions.
Make your trip safer by taking note of these recommendations:
HIGHWAY DRIVING
It is important to understand the main causes of tourist highway accidents in Mexico.
The roads in Mexico are tight and practically they don’t have any edges, so that the if the tire gets out of the road, it can cause a rollover, damages to the vehicle and injuries to the occupants.
You can definitely avoid these situations by paying more attention while driving, recognizing the highways in Mexico are less safe than in the U.S., and always looking out and following traffic signs.
We offer the standard coverage from all Mexican insurers as well as an extended coverage package such as: GNP Deluxe Package and Chubb/ACE Platinum Package. Both of them provide coverages that you will not be able to get with other Mexican insurers.
The coverage applies for accidents or loss involving the insured vehicle, within de Mexican Republic, and operates under the following standard sections:
Civil Liability.
Protects the purchaser (the insured) from the risks of liabilities imposed by lawsuits and similar claims. Liability insurance is designed to offer specific protection against third party insurance claims, i.e., payment is not typically made to the insured, but rather to someone suffering loss who is not a party to the insurance contract.
Collision, Total Theft, and Other Covered Perils.
Cover the vehicle up to the actual cash value stated on your policy for collision, overturn, fire, explosion, lightning, meteorological phenomenon such as cyclones, hurricanes, earthquakes, and wind storm, amongst others. Before paying a claim the insurance company will apply a deductible to the actual cash value stated in your policy.
Medical expenses for occupants.
Pays medical expenses for the insured vehicle occupants and driver of injuries resulted from a covered event and up to the limits stated in the policy. This coverage applies even if you are involved in an accident with an at-fault uninsured/underinsured driver.
Medical payments coverage is excluded for motorcycle policies.
Guaranteed bond and legal assistance.
Our policy provides legal services and pays up to the limit stated on your policy. This coverage offers assistance in the event you would have to deal with Mexican authorities.
Travel Assistance.
The insurance company provides some coverages for towing, other expenses, and travel assistance. To get a wider Travel Assistance coverage, please choose the MexVisit quote option.
IMPORTANT:
Please note that the insurance does not cover tickets as a result of a Mexican traffic regulation breach. It is the driver´s responsibility to respect Mexico´s traffic laws.

One of the most misunderstood features of Mexico auto insurance for U.S. and Canadian drivers is the deductible based upon the vehicle value percentage.
With a percentage deductible the insured pays a 2% deductible of the vehicle value for collision, subject to a minimum of $500 for cars and $1,000 for all other types of vehicles. For theft, 5% of the vehicle value, subject to a minimum of $1,000 for cars and $1,500 for all other types of vehicles.
Most of the U.S. and Canada auto financing agencies require the fixed deductibles of $500 for collision and $1000 for theft. With this option you will not have to pay high deductibles whenever a claim arises.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to leave the expiration date open because the coverage limits must be specified in the policy to make it valid.
However, we do offer lots of options, from one day up to one year, depending upon your needs. We offer you an easy way to renew your policy online.
Yes, that is a big problem. The Mexican law requires a valid driver license while driving. If you don’t have a valid license at the time of an accident, your insurance will not have coverage. We suggest you renew your license before driving either in Mexico or your country.
If your policy period is less than six months, for example, for 5 days, it cannot be cancelled once the effective date arrives.
Although you can cancel a six month or annual policy within the first 15 days after the initial effective date. In this case you will be charged just for the number of days with coverage. The policy fee is not refundable after the 30th day.
If you have changed your vehicle, we can process that change for you and the premium will be adjusted based upon the value of the old and new vehicle and the amount of time remaining on the policy.
The insurance policy specifies that in case of an accident, the coverage will only apply for drivers between the ages of 18 and 79 years old, who have a valid and authorized driver license.
Important: the insurance does not cover damages suffered or caused by drunk-driving.
All the adjusters are supposed to be bilingual, Spanish-English. If your adjuster does not speak English, you can ask for another one who does.
